Afterefects of World War I:

Event: several European empires were torn apart.

Result: Austria-Hungary was a great empire in Central Europe, and after the war, it was divided into several countries. The Ottoman Empire finally collapsed, and new countries were carved out in the Middle East.

Event: Germany was obliged to pay a huge war-debt.

Result: Germany quickly entered an economic recession. Hyperinflation, unemployment and poverty were rampart. Many Germans continued to emigrate to the United States even if there was already some Anti-German sentiment in America.

Event: the League of Nations was created.

Result: The League of Nations is the predecessor to the UN, but it had more power, because in theory, it could field soldiers. In the end, it failed to prevent World War II, and that was its main goal, to prevent future global wars.

Event: the Russian Empire became the Soviet Union.

Result: Russia had been governed by the Czars ("Czar" means emperator in Russian) for decades. The last Zar Nicholas II, of the Romanov Dynasty, entered the war, and suffered defeat after defeat against Germany. This made the war unpopular in Russia, and led to civil unrest. This unrest was used by Lenin to take power. He succeeded in doing so, and a couple of years later, he founded the Soviet Union as a Marxist-Leninist country.
