George washington's primary goal as commander-in-chief of the continental army

The Continental Congress commissioned George Washington as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army as of June 19, 1775.  He had not sought the post, he wrote to his wife, felt uneasy about it and had some reservations because he had never commanded a whole army in the field. The rebel army was not cohesive, disciplined and rich in military experience.  He himself didn´t possess significant military experience. So, his primary goal was to learn in practice and make his troops gain combat experience, to boost moral and confidence of the continental units.
