You will write 4 entries of a diary from the early 1800s. each entry will be one paragraph each and is to be written in first person (using the word i, as if you are that person on the expedition). this will be a description from the perspective of 4 people who were part of the lewis and clark expedition.

in a paragraph for each, describe the journey/experience of lewis, clark, sacajawea, and york from each person’s perspective (their voice).

read the lesson to learn about the historic events that took place during the lewis and clark expedition to give examples and historic accuracy to your diary!

topics to consider including: background/personality traits of the individual, role the individual played in the journey, feelings about the journey, conditions (terrain, food and insects/animals) how the individual interacted with others, unique information from the lesson.

1. Day 12 of our expedition, I am so glad that we had Sacajawea with us! She is a great guide and helps us navigate in this crazy ecosystem. Her ways are none that I have seen ever in my life, she knows this land by heart. Maybe I can learn the ways of her too and I will be extremely formidable in my soon to be home.

From the diary of Clark…

I was a man that grew up in Kentucky and Virginia. Joined the Virginia military then joined the Army. Who would have thought that I would be seeing all that I have seen because I was asked to help lead this expedition? This morning we started early, and it is a very cloudy and gloomy day. We meet up with the Native Americans today to trade supplies on many different islands. Then, we reached pillar rock and I can hear the ocean today. The sound of the waves crashing on the rocks. we must be getting close to it now. The Native American has helped us today by showing us down the river. I cannot wait until I see the Pacific Ocean.

From the diary of Lewis…

Once I was an army captain, a politician, and now I am an explorer. I am proudly taking an order by President Jefferson. I am taking 30 men along with myself included, and we are set off to explore unknown territory. I have devoted a great amount of time examining records written by other’s who have seen portions of the territory before. I have been instructed by President Jefferson to make a map with a new route to the Pacific Ocean, document and gather specimens, along with taking notes on activities, so, it can be studied later. I am supposed to gather as much information as possible concerning the geography and people I come across in this compelling journey. We may face extreme hardships in our future like starvation, exhaustion, sickness, harsh environments, and weather conditions. We are hoping to receive plenty of help from natives as traveling westward.

I am a Shoshone Indian and am the wife of Toussaint Charbonneau. I was kidnapped when I was 12 by the Hidatsa Indians. Lewis and Clark hired my husband to be and interpreter for them. Today I gave birth to my son we named him Jean Baptiste. The pain was so tedious and painful. He is a fine-looking baby boy. He is my first child

4. Date: August 24, 1804

From the diary of York…

I am William Clark’s body servant since Mr. Clark was 14 years old. I take care of Mr. Clark. Today I went hunting to make some stew to feed him. I shot two deer and cared them back. I want to be free, but I am working hard to help and see all that I can. The journey is hard, but I am enjoying being able to go and hunt.
