How would life have been different in the 1800s if the steam locomotive had not been invented

Life would have drastically changed, the access to materials,supplies, and much more would have been scarce. the development of the steam locomotive allowed for expansion of more people across the United States. And without the steam locomotive the supplies, people,workers and such would have had no way to make their way around to further develop our country.
