In 1524, France sent an expedition headed by Italian Giovanni da Verrazzano to the New World. He explored the coasts of North America. But it was until 1534 that the French tried to establish a colony. Jacques Cartier entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and took possession of New France on behalf of King Francis I. He later attempted to found a colony near present-day Montreal (Quebec), which failed.
