what were the two options to get from the atlantic to the pacific prior to the panama canal?

The answer is a. Cape Horn in South America, and b. Nicaragua.

Explanation:

Before the Panama Canal was finished in 1914, ships sailing in the Atlantic had to navigate to the southermost tip of the American continent, a very long trip, to reach the Pacific. The use of the canal in Panama allowed to reduce the journey by 8,000 miles .

The other option to build the canal was Nicaragua, where a long river, the San Juan river, connects with the huge Lake Nicaragua with the Caribbean Sea. Ultimately, the US decided to build the canal through Panamanian territory and discarded the Nicaraguan option.

        i'm fairly sure that the correct answers are 2 and 3.

        i used both my knowledge of world history and the process of elimination to obtain these answers. option 1 cannot be a possible selection because the mandate of heaven belongs to ancient chinese philosophical belief. option 4 sounds like it would benefit the region than detriment it. however, both 2 and 3 explain a potential reason for what could have contributed to the fall of the roman empire.
