Explanation: The Law of the Twelve Tables constitutes the origin of Roman law.

The laws were enforced in the Roman Republic by the pontiffs and representatives of the patrician class who kept them secret. In particular, they were mostly applied against the commoners. For this reason, a commoner named Terentile proposed in 462 BC that there should be a compilation and publication of an official legal code. The initiative aimed to allow the commoners to know the laws as well and to prevent their abuse by the pontiffs and patricians.

The idea of creating a published official law was rejected by the patricians for a long time, as they tried to maintain as long as possible the privilege in legal control over the Roman population. This condition gave the patricians enormous powers of manipulation and repression of the commoners. It was not until 451 BC that a group of ten men was assembled to prepare the official project.
