Why was ghandis salt march so significant in the struggle for india independence

Why was Mahatma Gandhi's Salt March so significant in the struggle for India's independence? ... The british law was unfair to the indians since salt was an important vital mineral for their diet. Also they were not allowed to collect or even sell it.
