Hitler used the fact that Stalin trusted him, so once the German army came close to the border of the Soviets, Hitler attacked the Soviets who didn't expected attack from them. It resulted in quick and efficient taking over of the southern part of the Soviet territory in Europe, just that the end result was not the same as in France, as the Soviets after lot of struggles managed to defeat the Germans, helped greatly by the severe weather conditions.
