For the transportation the water way was used as the most efficient way. But the develop of steam engine made a revolution in the land transportation. However from 1830s American government started to find a railway road for west.

In 1840s the several government took initiative and sponsored ma ny search workshop to find the rail road for the west. But no consensus road was found for the rivalries of the companies. On the other hand cities and states had a competition for terminus. So no road was found.

So in 1840s there was argument in Congress about the transcontinental raid road that where the railroad should run.
