During the Civil War, control of the Mississippi River became one of the main objectives.

On July 4, 1863 after a forty-day siege, Vicksburg was taken by General Ulysses S. Grant, which allowed the Union to control the river and divide the Confederacy into two. Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana were isolated from the rest of the Confederation and the defeat also meant for the Confederation the loss of livestock and agricultural resources of the first two.
