When northern abolitionist looked at the map of america in 1854, what would have caused them concern

There were a lot of free states between the abolitionist in the norht and the slavist in the south.

In 1854 there were still several states that hadn´t decided wether to join the union or to separate and become independent or become a new union, so the main concern to the northern states when looking at a map would be that there were lost of free states debating between siding with the abolitionists and the southern states.
