Italian general, politician, italian nationalist. born in sardinia, he became an apprentice seaman where he sailed the mediterranean and got to know the other italian city-states. he joined mazzini and the revolutionary secret society, young italy in 1833. they plotted to overthrow the king of sardinia and failed, and he fled to south america. there he organized a group of italian exiles to fight for uruguay’s independence from argentina. despite his exile he never gave up on his dream of uniting italy.
