The Nazi regime extended its territorial influence as a result of military victories throughout Europe. However, many of these places lost many basic services during the war, as the regime only had military activities as a priority. This caused an accumulation of waste in the most populous areas, leading to the proliferation of rats and other living forms who inhabited in the sewers.

As a result, diseases started to appear in these populated areas, leading to casualties as people did not have access to medical aid in order to treat their illness.

Because of the purpose of these places, mainly torturing and eliminating the Jewish population, which the Germans hated, sanitary conditions, not to mention anything else, were less than desirable. Among the many things left unattended by the invading Germans, was the lack of attention to the disposal of human waste, which was simply thrown into the streets and garbage cans of ghettos. In the end, apart from famine, contagious diseases helped to decimate the population trapped within these horrific places.
