The movements of abolition of slavery and anti-abolition faced several conflicts between them due to the incensed emotions and ideals expressed by both sides. The two almost became the dividing factor between the North and South and led to the initation of the Great Civil War that almost tore the country apart. One of the ironies of the matter is that although Northerners highly believed that all slaves in the South wanted to be freed, the truth of the matter, discovered years later after many studies, is that the number of slaves who wished to be freed was not very high, given that many of them had an almost paternalistic relationship with their owners and became dependent on them. Whatever the case, there was a conflagration of problems that arose and led to small conflicts between both factions and these conflicts, particularly the inundation of the South with campaigns and pamphlets against slavery, but also the fanaticism and hostility generated by abolitionists in the North, one case being Lowell, Massachusetts, led to the Civil War. In the end, these hostile campaigns and raids, this constant attack on Southern slaveholders, the intent on the part of abolitionists to also rouse freed black slaves against their old masters did not have the desired effect of stopping slavery and ensuring the rights of black people, but they created a hatred between white and black people in the South that led to segregation and the extension of abuse against freed slaves.
