Background information: this is a journal entry from a soldier fighting on the western front. the trenches are mud up to our ankles. in other places, the trenches are waist deep in water. we spend all our time digging and filling sandbags, running for supplies and stores, or building up the tops of the trench. there is no time to be weary or bored. what was the effect of the muddy trenches, according to this soldier? he could not get clean. he did not have time to fight. he could not sleep. he did not have time to be tired.
