Why it is important to study both heroes and villains in history?

History is written by the victors is a quote many people often forget. We need to look at both villains  and heroes in war to see the reasoning behind their actions, what we can learn from these actions, and if the heroes and villains label really applies or is it our own morals saying these people are heroes and these people are villains.
