Was part of the stuart dynasty from scotland. he believed in the divine right of kings. he spent a lot of money and did not like to go through parliament to get new taxes raised. james i charles ii charles i son of james i. came to power in 1625. believed in the divine right of kings. he dissolved the parliament and tried to rule on his own. in 1642, he tried to arrest 5 members of parliament that were strong supporters of the rights of the parliament. this outraged the public and thousands of soldiers rushed to defend the parliament against the king and king charles fled london. by summer of 1642 this led to the english civil war charles i james i charles ii became king in 1660 when the monarchy was restored in england. under his leadership the nation began to thrive, and the power of the puritans over england began to be limited. charles ii charles i james i one of parliament’s leaders, he became the head of the army of the parliament. eventually he led the parliamentary forces to victory against the royalist forces of king charles. following the english civil war he became the “lord protector” at the head of the government. oliver cromwell john rolfe captain john smith
