A lot of people have done that in American history.  Perhaps the most relevant at the present time (late 2018) is the current Chief Executive of the United States, including his administration, bureaucrats, spokespersons, apologists, supporters and sycophants.

(Whose own grandparents were immigrants, and whose current wife is currently one, if ya catch my drift.)

Just this minute, as I was writing this answer, I just had the most awesome idea !  Give immigrants the vote, and THEN watch his attitude change fast !

following the war, writers showed a tendency to work on artistic or social matters rather than political themes. while postwar literature may not have been the greatest period of english literature, the themes provided excellent critics a high number of novels. such examples include anthony burgess, anthony powell and frank kermode, all of which can be placed under the progressive view.
