It is believed that the history of the jack o lantern initially started in Ireland around the 19th century.The first Jack O Lantern was said not to be a pumpkin because they didn't have any pumpkins in Ireland. So they used turnips or even potatoes. The people would place the lanterns on their doorways, after they would carve the vegetables. People carved scary faces on the vegetables to scare evil spirits. But first they would cut the top off to form a lid, and took out whatever was inside. This tradition was used on Halloween and continued as Irish immigrants moved to America, bringing along their festivity. And this tradition was passed down to all parts of the world and is used still to this day. Later in time though, we started using pumpkins, but there are probably still people out there in different parts of the world that use turnips or potatoes.
