Why did the united states continue to support south vietnamese leader ngo dinh diem's corrupt and weak regime

Ngo Dinh Diem was a South Vietnamese politician who supported the democracy instead of the communism. Although his regime was considered corrupt, the United States chose to support him anyway, in order to encourage Ngo Dinh Diem to broaden his government and establish more democratic institutions.
