Why did european nations compete to colonize america

They competed to colonize America because it was a new land filled with valuable exotic goods. Many raced to claim lands for their nation to gain access to crops like tobacco, cotton, and other goods. Many raced to claim nations because they also needed resources to help support their counties back home and they also competed because there was a bit of a race between who could conquer land first.
