Social exchange theory is a Social and psychological theory and it is the study of a social behavior that takes place between two parties and it also specifies the cost benefit analysis which determines the risks as well as benefits of that behavior. According to this theory, these calculations are based on the relationships between people, their friendships as well as relationships that are there at the professional front. During the initiation of this theory, Sociologist George C. Homans defined this theory as the exchange of activity which may be tangible or intangible.  

The major purpose of the social exchange theory is to get maximum benefits and minimize costs. This theory has one more aspect and that is looking for the alternatives which are possible to achieve if someone is doing analyzing costs and benefits against the comparison levels then one might also look at possible alternatives.
