What country claimed land west of the original 13 colonies

The Spanish had first claimed the Columbia islands and from there had explored into what is now known as Mexico, Florida, and South America. This is all south of the 13 Colonies. Then there is the French. The French had claimed Canada and then they decided to move south to gain more land.
