How was the appointment of two consuls during the roman republic an example of a democratic principle?

Two consul system of the Roman Republic were elected to serve a term of one year.  There were checks and balances between the two and performed many government duties.  These share some charactics of contemporary democracy especially in voting as well as veto powers.
