The #1 cost of the American Civil War would have to be the lives lost in the battle. This is because almost a million soldiers were killed or wounded, that is an exponential amount of lives. The Union lost about 635,000 soldiers that were either killed or injured. The Confederacy lost about 358,000 soldiers that were either killed or injured in the battle. The Union lost much more men to the war because they had much more population than the Confederacy. Most of the Confederacy people were farmers and did not participate in the Civil War at the time. Many of the soldiers were shot when they came out of the woods, lying dead in almost perfect lines. They might have had families or they were waiting for the right time to say it. Whoever they had, it must have been hard for the families to be told that their husband, father, or even grandfather was dead. Mothers and daughters also could have died, because they played an important role in being nurses, spies, and soldiers too. It was very hard to be so far away from each other, because families wrote to each other, but it took so long to get a letter from the soldier to his/her family making it even harder to bare being away from them. I believe that the #1 cost of the American Civil War was the lives lost because there were some many that were lost to the battle. So many families were devastated because someone they loved had died. Also, they were all Americans, meaning that this war might have had the most Americans die in history.
