What system drove european nations to compete for control of limited worldwide wealth?

I'm sure the answer is colonization. Many groups of people wanted to expand over the years. Many people need different things then others. For example Some might need minerals and others want food type stuff like coffee or fish look at at map of 1914 it shows you some things that different groups wanted or who had what land.
