This is a person who uses a "heart-lung machine" during surgeries that require the patients heart to be stopped so the surgeon can operate on a still, unbeating heart. This person needs to keep up to date on the latest developments in their field of expertise. I would certainly hope that this person continues their education during their career. And in fact, the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Certification (ABCP) has the following in their job description of a Perfusionist.
