Researchers wanted to determine if a compliance technique called “foot in the door” was more effective than a direct order request. Freedman and Frasier set out to determine this. They selected a neighborhood outside the campus of Stanford University and went up to 100 residents. For 50 residents, the researchers asked them to place a large yard sign in their front yard that said “Drive Safely”. In this condition, only 18% said yes.. For another 50 residents, the researchers first asked them to put a small postcard sized “Drive Safely” sign in their window to which 95% complied. Then, a week later, the researchers asked them to put the large “Drive Safely” sign in their front yard. This time, 65% complied with the request. Freedman and Frazier used this study to show that once we make an attitudinal commitment, we tend to be more consistent. Match The number to the letter
