Patanjali defines yoga as having eight components. The eight limbs of yoga are Yama ( abstinences), niyama ( observances), asana ( yoga postures), pranayama ( breath control), pratyahara ( withdrawal of the senses), Dharana  ( concentration), Dhyana ( meditation ) and samadhi ( absorption).
