The way you can protect your self in an abusive relationship is to tell someone whats going on, tell the police, or just leave from the relationship when you get a chance.

Tell someone you trust or call the police.

Communication. releasing emotions/feelings to someone you know you can count on. ; ) someone who may not understand but willing to listen.
