Explanation:

Coke is produced through a process known as destructive distillation. This involves heating coke at high temperatures (up to 1300°C) in an airtight environment (known as coke ovens). The result after the heating and distillation processes is metallurgical coke with no other constituents.

The coke battery is a combination of up to 100 coke ovens which are used at the same time. It is continuously kept running to allow the stable flow of gas. A typical coke oven consists of the coking, heating and regenerative chambers.

Pollutants released during the coking process include carbon monoxide, polycyclic aldehydes, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, arsenic, lead, tar, carbon dioxide, amongst others.
