However, sleep deprivation, which also known referred to as sleeplessness or insufficient sleep, is the condition of not having adequate sleep. It can be either chronic or acute and may be diverse in severity.

One of the major effects of sleep deprivation is the increment in the time needed to fall asleep (sleep latency) and the ability to stay asleep when sleep is fully initiated, which can be measured by polysomnography (PSG).

This is a sleep disorder which is characterised with elongation or extension of dept of Rapid Eye moments (REM) stage above normal levels.

It is caused by sleep deprivation or withdrawal from the abuse of substances which suppresses REM-stage(alcohol, cocaine etc.),

In such individual it is as if they incurred debts of REM sleep,when they were could not sleep. which they must pay back, thus the brain keep the debt (of REM sleep) for them.

Therefore when they get opportunity to sleep, such individuals spend more time at the REM stage than usual trying to pay the debt back(-know as sleep rebound.) This accounts for Hamid inability to sleep because the REM stage is characterised with active brain wave activities close to wakefulness.
