Hi there. I'm a piece of food. What kind am I? I'm a piece of pizza! I'm made made of bread, sauce, and cheese. People love me! When you eat any kind of food it has to go somewhere. The food goes through the complete digestive system follow me and I'll show you!
If you were to eat me, you would start by chewing me in your mouth, the saliva in your mouth would then me so that I would be able to move more easily through your esophagus into your stomach. Once I get to the stomach there's a bunch of acid called gastric acid, or stomach acid. That stomach acid breaks down food like me. The stomach makes an enzyme that starts digestion of protein!
After that it pushes the small particles of food into the first part of the small intestine. The small intestine is where most of the digestion and absorption of my kind (food) takes place. In the small intestine, I would be processed by different chemicals that are designed for specific parts of the meal. All of the different parts of me are digested by enzymes which are released by the pancreas. Once all of my proteins, fats, and carbohydrates are digested, absorption takes place in the small intestine. After all the nutrients are absorbed by the intestine, they pass into the blood stream and are carried to the liver.
The large intestine, also called the , is not responsible for my digestion. Instead, its purpose is to complete water and electrolyte absorption begun by the small intestine. The is the last part of the digestive tract, unfortunately that means our trip is going to end soon. It's made of the muscles that line in your pelvis and two other muscles called sphincters. The pelvic floor muscle stops stool from coming out when it's not supposed to. The sphincters give you control over your stool.
All of that said, if you were a liquid, like soup, or if you were bread your experience would be much different from mine. If you were to drink water it would do the same thing, but it would take a little longer and you might feel bubbles in your stomach especially if you've had a carbonated drink. Soup will also travel smoothly into the digestive system. Solid foods take time to be broken down into small pieces so it can be made into energy and waste. So if you were a piece of bread like me it would take a while for the stomach to digest you because bread takes longer to be broken down than other foods .The reason bread takes longer to be broken down is because flour becomes a half solid form when it is mixed with water.
Well, now you know how the complete digestive system works! It was taking you along with me on that exciting trip. I hope you have learned all that you wanted to know, take care!
