What are the major roles of game officials in team sports?

To give impartial decisions on many different things, such as enforcement of rules, calling whether something did or didn't happen (goal, strike, etc.) and to allow players to focus on the game instead of thinking about whether a certain action was, or wasn't against the set rules.
