If Rhode Island has about 1,000 square miles with 1,000,000 people to figure out the population per square mile, all you have to do is  1,000,000/1,000= 1,000, so there are about 1,000 people per square mile in Rhode Island. For Alaska, you would take the number of people per square mile in Rhode Island (1,000) and multiply it by the square miles of land in Alaska to get 663,000,000, so Alaska would have a population of 663 million they had the same amount of people per square mile as Rhode Island does.
