Why not all movement along faults produces earthquakes?

Normal faulting occurs where the crust is being pulled apart. Reverse faulting occurs where the crust is being compressed. Strike-slip movement occurs when crustal blocks move sideways past each other, usually along nearly-vertical faults.  An oblique slip comprises numerous groupings of these basic movements.

 Faults can be as short as a few meters and as long as 1000 km.
