They wanted to expand the idea of democracy in governments and backed all kinds of revolutions based on democracy, also involving themselves in proxy wars. They also believed that there would be a domino effect, where one country fell to communism, and that would cause other countries to become communist. This later proved to not be completely correct. This was very costly in lives and money.
