How much does the ground move in an earthquake?.

Ground displacements depends up on local geology and location of site from the ground rupture during earthquake. If the location of earthquake is on ground (not under sea) then for magnitude 7.0 or so the horizontal displacement could be in the range of 50 to 200 centimeters or so. The vertical displacement depends up on earthquake mechanism at the site. But for normal or transverse type of mechanism it could be of the order of anything between 50 to 120 centimeters or more.

The seismic force as seen in the form of waves has maximum force in the direction at right angles to rupture and is minimum in the direction of rupture. Rupture means the length of the fault ruptured as seen on ground.
