Imagine that a geologist sees two outcrops of resistant sandstone, as depicted in the cross-section sketch. The region between the outcrops is covered by soil. A distinctive bed of cross-bedded sandstone occurs in both outcrops, so the geologist correlated the western outcrop (on the left) with the eastern outcrop.
