Japan, China and the US are the top 3 consumers of seafood and 1.2 billion people depend on seafood as their daily source of protein. However our fishing stocks have decreased by 90% between 1950 and 2011. In addition, certain commonly used fishing practices cause horrendous damage to the rest of ocean ecosystems. A study in 2006 estimated that, if fishing continues at the current rate, all the world's fisheries will have collapsed by the year 2048. What might be causing greater and greater demand for seafood? Why do you think we have seen a dramatic increase over the last 50 years in how many fish we are able to catch?
