A subsistence economy is an economy in which most goods are consumed by the producers themselves. The majority of people work in agriculture. This is a form of economy that can still be found in developing countries today.  

Unlike in a market economy, people are highly self-sufficient, which means that distribution is limited. The distribution that does exist can come from solidarity like with the hunter-gatherers. Where there is regional specialization, barter trade may arise to obtain items that cannot be produced by oneself. A third possibility is to give gifts in order to create reciprocal relationships.

The supply techniques of food and goods that characterize the subsistence economy are subsistence agriculture, harvesting, hunting, fishing and pastoralism. In this kind of economy every single member of the community provides for the sustenance of himself and others through cooperation, solidarity, sharing and giving, so as to guarantee the survival of all members of the community.
