No links please Function and Location of Ancient Cities
The ancient city was the organizational focus of the state. Agriculture had to be planned and controlled to guarantee a

along rivers for availability of water for agriculture and transportation. Sites were also chosen for their defensibility, as
well as their location along travel and trade routes. Less accessible, more isolated places were at a disadvantage.
