Why do religions have distinctive distributions

In many sophisticated religions their followers come from places of the religions origin or migration. (Assuming this is what you are talking about) I'll use a few examples here. The most popular religion in the world today: Christianity is made up of 3 billion people but it comes from a nation that is primarily Jewish then and now. So why is it so popular? Well, for one reason the Romans have a huge role in the religion we know today, especially Catholicism. The Romans held one of the largest empires in the history of Europe and at its height it stretched from The southern islands of Greece, to the island of Great Britain, to the shores of France, and the land of the Slavs in the east. The main religion that derived from Rome was Christianity. Thats why in nations like Italy and Poland they are primarily Catholic and is why you will also hear the term "Roman Catholic" used a lot in referring to the Catholic church. The rest of Europe especially the places where the Romans held land it is much like these. When people migrated from Europe migrated to America in the 19th century they kept their religion. Most of them passed through Ellis Island in New York City and settled there and in the surrounding areas. Which is why New York, and New Jersey generally has primarily catholic populations. Also I'll used Buddhism as another example. Buddhism is primarily practiced in China, along with Korea and South East Asia. But it started out in Northern India. This was because the trading route network known as the Silk Road spread this religion east out of India, and ancient traders would exchange religion and ideas (It is also the same for Islam, and how it spread out of the Arabian peninsula.) And due to China's huge population and Buddhism's influence in China the religion has stuck. I know this was a little long but I hope this helps!
