How many times greater in magnitude is an earthquake that measures 7.0 on the Richter scale as opposed to one that measures 3.0?

An earthquake that measures a 7.0 on the Richter scale will be roughly 10,000 times greater than one that measures a 3.0, in accordance with the math behind the Richter scale.

The Richter scale is a scale designed by Charles Richter many years ago. This scale is used to measure the local magnitude of earthquakes using a logarithmic model. Due to this, when we change from one magnitude to another magnitude just one level higher, we are accounting for a 10 fold increase in the force of the earthquake.

For this reason, we can confirm that an earthquake that measures a 7.0 on this scale is 10 thousand times more powerful than one that measures a 3.0. This is given the nature of the scale itself, for every level that we increase we must multiply the force by ten.
