This principle states that "in a sequence of rock strata, the feature that cuts another is younger than the rocks they permeate through".

In this we see a sequence of rock strata that has been cross-cut by a fault. The fault is a reverse fault. From the principle of cross cutting relationship, the fault is younger than all of the strata in this sequence.
