With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the end of the Cold War, the bipolar world that had been standing since the end of World War II ended: a capitalist world and a communist one.

From that year on, capitalism took control of most of the nations of the world, with the exception of a few countries, generally authoritarian. This made the United States the only visible superpower capable of influencing international policy with its decisions. Thus, organizations such as the UN, NATO and even smaller regional organizations saw their policies influenced directly or indirectly by American interests.

The United States began to take a much more participatory role as an intermediary in international conflicts, and to guide the destinies of the world economy, being the main investor in the different countries around the world.

It is only in the 2010s that this situation started to change, with the advent of China as a political and economic power capable of challenging American power.
