Our first discussion board is about one of the most remote places on earth: easter island. it is located approximately 2,325 miles west of south america and almost 1,400 miles from the nearest inhabited island. three-hundred years ago, when european explorers reached this island, they found a barren landscape and a population of 2,000 who were living a primitive life. the explorers, though, also noticed hundreds of statues standing 33 feet tall and weighing almost 100 tons, clearly signs that a sophisticated civilization once lived here. so, what happened? well, scientists have their theories that are rooted in the idea that the once flourishing society overused its resources to the point where they could no longer sustain their existence. a larger question from this theory emerges, and it becomes one for us to explore and discuss: is easter island an isolated incident of overuse and near extinction, or is it a harbinger of things to come for the rest of the planet?

in addition to any opinions you may have about these theories, and you want to share with the rest of the class, you must find an outside source, preferably an article specifically about easter island. as part of your discussion, you must provide the name and location (i. e. web site or other format) of the article and summarize it down to 100 words or more – do not copy and paste the article. once you have provided your summary and any additional thoughts about easter island. the result of this discussion should be enlightening and perhaps we can make our own conclusions about easter island (isolated or harbinger).
