The scientist use the GPS device to map out the routes where the two plates have been navigating and coming closer form different directions and monitor the earth's plates movement as there are various major and 20 minor plates on earth like in case of the Atlantic ocean is spreading. Thus S-shaped formations have taken place and the west coast of America is getting closer to the eastern coast of Asia and as a result, the pacific plate is getting subducted under the North America plate and the rate of spreading of the major plates is about 1 cm per year and pacific plate is fastest 10 cm per year.
