L'Ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts en 1539 du roi François 1er a déclaré le français comme étant la langue administrative et juridique.

Par la suite, le français évoluera en français "classique" au XVIe siècle et XVIIe  siècle, puis "moderne" au XVIIIe siècle.
